mc 21 died on me ,any pointers ? please

Tue Jun 29, 2010 10:11 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi rideing along slow traffic and dies on me got fuel and ignition lights ,
got it home and have since started fault finding
and have noticed :-
Pgm gets warm to hot one side (white plug side )
oil light (tank full) very intermittent when in neutral and run/stop swicth operated
no spark at pugs
power valves can be heard to move (have checked and are not seized}
battery doesnt seem to have a lot of life ,is this due to pgm 3 drawing to much current?
dont want to risk blowing my pgm 3 or is it to late Sad
any help appreciated
prior to this it had been running fine with no trouble
many thanks

Measure the output of the battery. If it is flat, the dash lights will flicker, indicators won't flash, etc. (on my mc18 anyway). Don't know about the PGM getting hot, if you can get it running and check the battery voltage while its running that will tell you if the Rec/Reg is working. If that's not working and you are getting too high a voltage output through the system it could make it hot? Good luck!

If you don't really know how to check out your electrical system, follow the steps here:

charging system

Mine was being a bitch to start and having carried out the checks decided my battery was dead and the reg/rect suspect. Replaced them yesterday and it now starts second kick.

The case does act as a heatsink, and there are a lot of electronic bits in there all getting warm during operation.

Do the basic checks on your charging system - battery voltage with the bike off, then switch on and switch on headlight and see what it reads.

If that's good, start it and check out the charging voltage - if it's gonna blow it up I suspect it already has, and a three minute run to do tests won't overheat it.

You could always disconnect the powervalve motor if you really are worried before doing the tests, that won't affect the readings.

thanks for the advice guys but cant get spark at plug ,have put another battery on and my pgm isnt playing the game, servos wont cycle properly and the oil light refuses to come on added to the fact the pgm gets rather warm to hot ,have to go for the pgm failing ,
now what do i do can i get another, will this happen again? as i can see no real reason as to the cause of failure as every thing was spot on when running, certainly on the power valve side of things at least as for the charging rectifier side i will not know till i can get it running
anyone got a working pgm 3 for sale ?
thanks Malc (utterly deverstated)

You could put your PGM on another bike to make sure it is duff first. If it is, you need to find out what fried it.

Take the plastic top off it (slim screwdriver should be used to prise round the edges) and see if any of the internal rubber coating is melted.

Took the box apart and no visible melting but does have that horrid electical burnt smell about it , any one offering to plug my box on their bike to see if its a no goer will be happy to pay costs
and if it is a no show is my standard mc21 just a pure garage ornament ? ,seems a shame ,my only other idear was to stick a big mx engine and go down the supermono route but dont really want to do that if i can help it ,and is it worth anything without a pgm 3?
cheers Malc

Although difficult to find a PGM3 won't be ridiculously expensive worth testing first though. If you have it in bits im happy to electronicly test it but I wouldnt be prepared to plug it into my bike.

I have fixed CDi's in the past.

Plugging a dead one into a good bike is pretty safe, it's plugging a good one into a dead bike which you should never do!
