Buying MC18 in UK?

Thu Feb 18, 2010 10:14 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi All,

I have been hankering for an MC18 for a while (probably 20 years), but they dont seem to come up very often now (I wont go into 'should have bought one 10 years ago' ... if only...)

I saw one on ebay recently that needed a lot of work, and bid up to my £500 ish limit, and was outbid. That got me thinking about my expectations.

I want a rough one to restore, but not smashed bodywork. I'd prefer a black/red r5K with high pipes. I know about the crank issue and understand MC21 cranks or engine can be made to fit.

So the obvious questions, What would you say the going rate is? I see some MC16s on Ebay for £1500 which seems silly, and I wont even mention MC28s.

Am I expecting too much and living in the past ?

Comments? Vincent

i paid £700 for my r5k 2yrs ago but i've spent at least that on it again on it to get half way decent!
a good r5k would be close to £2k . and an sp(r6k) even more .

My MC18 2J has a nice thick folder full of reciepts. I couldn't even begin to say how much I've spent!
I would say any MC18 under 2K will probably have need or have repaired panels.
All bodywork and major parts are getting very rare in the UK now. It's weird though that more MC16 stuff is sold on eBay than any other model.
IMO all NSRs are now in the classic realm where it's either luck or cost for parts. Check out David Silvers and try some random part no's from the parts manual
If you are thinking of running a track day bike, it probably doesn't matter about the panels. Just get the fibreglass out and patch it up.

Dyl, If I am ever in your neck of the woods I owe you a beer.

I bought it, unseen, in a rush of blood - I barely even haggled!

Arrives next week.

I need to lie down...

Arrived today!

MOT expired April 2008, so I guess it has not been used in a while. Just need to figure out why it was parked up.

Bad points
  • Inside Tank rusty
  • Fuel tap missing
  • mismatched fairing fasteners
  • Upper fairing and Screen need replacing
  • rear panels bit cracked
  • rear mudguard chopped
  • Dead battery
  • Fork seal weeping
  • Ominous bolt missing from clutch cover
Good Points
  • Kickstart runs over, compression 'feels' ok
  • Brakes look ok
  • Pipes/Tailcans look undamaged
  • Genuine Honda Key plus matching lockset
So Im on the lookout for a few bits, and need to get a battery and try get it started at the weekend. Hopefully the PGM and crank are OK ...
