It starts...

you may or may not know I bought a 21SP last year and TBF its a bit doggy I am led to believe it spent a good few years living outside in bits.

Well last year I managed to get quite a good deal and swapped the panels for some resprayed Rothmans fairings (although mine is a Pentax) got hold of some pipes from the states, drilled the airbox and rejetted to suit.

I also got hold of some 28 fork bottoms and had those fitted by K-Tech when the forks and the rear shock went in for a rebuild and last but not least fitted the SP1 calipers and Pazzo shorty levers that I had left over from when I sold my RVF (which incidently paid for the whole return to NSR shibang)

The bike runs fine and goes well, the rebuilt sussys being awesome but as the engine is a bit of an unknown its time for a top-end and me being me a full clean and polish up especially the swing arm as it is pretty badly scratched in places.

anyhoo...

here it is yesterday before I started.

and here it is about an hour later..

do you think this has any life left in it?

The engine is coming out next week with the help of Fontyyy and several bolts spending the week soaked in GT85, once thats done I can order the correct rebuild kit and a load of other stuff from Jap4, then the engine and I are going to visit our favorite HRC slut in Plymouth for a lesson in crank case splitting at the end of March.

big breath...and it starts...

Pentax is the way to go I think!!

It certainly looks much better than when I first picked it up, your right, it had been sitting outside half stripped...no carbs, no brakes, no foothangers, no bodywork, bent forks etc etc, basically it had been raped over several years. Luckily I was just about to break a 21R so all the bits just swapped over and it was saved from being stripped a broken for spares which is what nearly happened to it.

I just put some carbs on it and she fired up, sounded a bit rough to start with but then soon cleared up and sounded good. I am sure you will do a cracking job and restore it back to its former glory. In fact it looked very good already when I came to see it.

I would love to put it back to Pentax however funds do not stretch to a respray so unless there is anyone out there with a full pentax kit who wants rothmans....rothmans it will stay.

TBF other than a bit of powdercoat, topend, chain, sprocket, pads and lines all it needs is a deep clean and some attention to the marks on the swingarm.

Should be a breeze.

well thats me £380 out of pocket.

2x full top end rebuild kits
1x AFAM chain and sprocket set
1x Full set of wheel bearings and seals
1x pair of goodridge front brake lines
1x set of EBC sintered brake pads

+ the money I spent on cleaning products yesterday....and the money I still have to spend on powdercoat, plus the money I have to spend on paint......this could be expensive!!

Ive found its best not to keep a record of what you spend on a project!
Much better to kid yourself (and the missus) its cost you less than it really has Very Happy
Look forward to seeing the finished bike though Monkey, seen a couple of your other projects and I like the attention to detail and quality of your work.

Good progress!

If it was me, I'd be having the crankcases and barrels vapour blasted.

Look forward to see the finished project.

As the engine is out, its a great opportunity to split the cases and pop in some new crank seals. The seals are not expensive. It would be a shame if you got the whole bike back together and then found you had a tired crank seal when you started putting a few miles on it. Whilst split, you could vapour blast all the parts. The guy I use offers really good rates. PM me if you would like the contact details.

Been in the shed all day with some Gunk, Citil Bang and a load of toothbrushes..

I dont think it turned out to bad even Steve wont mind working on this..

My Radiator soaking in a big bowl of soapy water

and if I pile it all up the I am not so scared of it....

Powdercoat and paint...

I gave the frame a going over but ran out of degreaser, broke the calipers down as well and puzzled over removing the wheel bearings.

next up is to finish degreasing the frame, start polishing out the scratches in the swingarm and start to clean up the stuff in the scarey pile!!
