MC21 R7L my little Honda

Thu Feb 14, 2013 6:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Well this little baby started life in a bike shop in Skegness, and was a straight swap for my 06 R1. There was me thinking I'd got a bargain, very low mileage, dealer supplied with warranty. How I laughed after I rode her home.

So back in Manchester the nightmare started to unfold.
Wheels, so badly flaking both tyres went flat every 2 weeks
Fuel tap, would not turn off (ever)
Floats, didn't float
Needle valves, didn't do anything
Brakes, in such a condition they would probably fail the MOT on horse and cart
Tyres, mismatched front and rear, rear on the wrong way round
Clip-ons, trapped your hands on full lock and both grips spun round and round and round
Gear lever, falling off
Rear brake lever, bent and didn't really work
Front forks, Best described as a pair of shiny tubes towards the front of the bike
Rear shock, (none standard) no compression damping but and plenty of rebound damping
Engine was flat as anything, could have been due to the choke which stuck on and the throttle that sort of opened and closed something random at the far end of the cable, and an oil pump that set to open (full open) .

So the work began. Yes There were many times I thought I'd take her back, but something said persevere.

Sort the simple stuff out first, fuel tap, floats and valves, 2T oil, grips, all replaced (David Silver spares), flush cooling system, reset oil pump, reset float heights. Quick check on the top end and lordy lordy all seems OK. New choke cable, cleaned and lubed other cables and balanced the carbs.
Engine now sounds crisp.
Bit of work touching up some rough paint on brackets, disks etc. strip and clean the calipers, replace hoses with HEL items (nice). Wheels off to be powder coated (Chicago in Mosley £49 the pair), new wheel bearings (Howard & Sons Stockport) and a pair of Dunlop QII's.
Looking much better, so off to Maxton for some serious suspension, GP20 internals and a new rear shock.
Tyga rear sets with height adjuster looked the biz, but my ancient limbs can't cope. Simple turn the height adjusters upside down and make them height reducers. Perfect.

Oh yeah and a new cherished plate

Mother hubberd you have gone to town on her. Like the fact you didn't mess about and went straight to max ton for suspension, they are top notch folk with great products. How have your wheels turned out that sounds like a good price and I need to get mine done ASAP.

Glad your happy with her now, but your story only highlights what i have been saying for a long time, that a lot of folk out there are still prepared to go to dealers and pay inflated prices to get perhaps a 3 month warranty and a shiny looking bike, when in all reality its probably just come out the container and had little done to it, when the other option would be to buy off someone, for instance, this forum, who have perhaps owned the bike several years, gained a bit of knowledge about it and sorted all its problems, but no their still frightened of that private sale. Hope she is running sweet now mellorp, not as fast as your old R1, but youll have a big permanent smile, enjoy. Cheers Les.

I agree with you Les (i have only ever bought from a dealer once) but it's not so often that a forum member parts with their pride and joy and at least Another nsr has been salvaged and turned into a desirable bike once again.

Sounds good but I cant see any pictures none of your links work for me Sad You wont regret swapping the r6 in they are ten a penny, the nsr will get attention werever you pull up and they are a grin to ride. Especially if you get a group of nsr's together.

Have to agree 100% with Les, most of the stuff in dealers is straight out of the container with no history. Much better to buy from someone who has owned the bike for a few years and sorted out any issues.

Thanks.

I tried to buy thru the forum (Thanx Hobbit) but nothing seemed suitable and there was only the one offer at the time.
