MC21 crank seal help

Mon Aug 25, 2008 9:14 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey all, after four long years I finally started to put my 90SP back together. I had blown a crank seal at a track day some time ago, it smoked very bad out of the right pipe.

Early in 2006 I ordered all the case seals from Tyga and the bearings from the guy in Australia on here, I took the bottom end to Harry Okuda who did the work of replacing the bearings.

After another couple of years I finally got around to a fresh top end and putting everything back in the bike today only to start it and smoke pouring out the right pipe (lower cylinder) I know it is trans oil...it stinks Mad

Is it possible I got a bad one, or Harry got something wrong?? He is no longer with us....besides myself.....I can not believe I have to pull this all over again and split the cases.....anything I should pay close attention to or look for when apart?

Thanks..... Crying or Very sad

Check that the seal was not put in on the skew. Easily done.

Can be done with the motor in the frame too.

Thanks guys...I do have an extra engine laying about, maybe I should pull that all apart for practice first. I did have a look at all the good stuff Andy has put up, but a few questions.

It has been so long now that I forgot if I had Harry change just the two outside bearings...which I guess I must have as I found a bag last night with my old parts!! (just two bearings and the old seals)

I am assuming, and I now remember that the cage on one of the bearings started to break up and one of those fragments tore up the seal...and it is this big seal that is all beat up in these pics keeping the oil out right??

Anyways, here are some pics of my old stuff....and Andy, do you mean by checking in the bike just pulling all the right side stuff?

Thank You!

Yes, the crank can be removed with the motor in the frame. Not really adviseable on an MC16 or MC18 as the frame is really narrow (but I suspect could be done), but plenty of room on the MC21 and MC28.

I see what you are saying Andy...but I can whip it back out of the frame no problem....but just for clarification, my problem with oil coming in is that big damaged seal in my photos, correct? I am not worrying about the center bearing seal right?

Hopefully like Matt said it the seal was improperly installed and I can straighten it out...just want to make sure that is what I am after.
Thanks!

If the seal has gone in skewed it will need replacing. The cases will have distorted it when they were torqued up.

Yes, it will be the big seal that is letting transmission oil into the crankcase.
