Avgas, what is the advantage ?

Mon Nov 19, 2007 4:03 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm looking at a bike set up for avgas.

As avgas is difficult to get hold of, maybe expensive, I wonder what the advantages is, using avgas and what it takes to set the bike back to normal tankgas:
Ignition timing ? Change of compression, heads ? jets for sure.

Someone told me its lower octane than tank gas. Is this correct ??

u could use shell vpower instead of avgas, shell claim it has a octane rating of 99 RON and i use it in all my bikes as it doesent make much of a difference price wise to normal petrol on a bike.

Twisted Evil More compression, more advance, leaner jetting = more power Twisted Evil Without any of the above its a waste of money and on the street its kind of unpractical.

As Jeremy says, you're wasting money unless you adjust your settings to take advantage of the fuel characteristics. This goes for any fuel, not just avgas.

I used to run my street bike on avgas 100LL, but I was a little worried about the 200 litre drum at my house, so I switched back to pump fuel when it ran out. This meant lower compression, less ignition advance and a richer carb setup. Lost a couple of ponies, and lost that delicious smell, but much easier just to stop at the gas station to fill up.
