Engine Number

Fri Jul 27, 2007 12:05 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi can any one tell me what the engine numbers should start with for an MC21 as my crank case says MC16 on it but is running a 300 kit?

And?!

beakergixer750cc's got an MC16 motor with a 300 kit! It means nothing.

Fontyyy's post is a little misleading. Although most cases say MC16E on them, they can be from MC16, MC18, MC21, or MC28. I am guessing you are talking about the cases on eBay, but if you are not, then you want to be absolutely sure the cases you are getting are suitable for the crank you have.

Me, StephenRC45, & Matt@TYGA all have cases that don't say MC16E. There you go Fontyyy!

So following on from your comments Andy is it obvious if the crank cases are not from an MC21/28. Is it possible to fit a crank from a 21 into an earlier crank case and visa versa?
How can you be certain of the age of a crank case if you do not have the original part number or chassis for that matter?

Mc16 crank cases look nothing like the later MC18-'28 cases. However cranks from the 18's will not fit into '21's and '28's or visa versa.

Telling if a crank case is from a '18, '21, or '28 is quite hard from a photo.

An '18 case doesnt have a GPS hole which is about the only external difference.

As for if its running a 300 or not... If it had a 300 top end attached to it that just means the cases are under less stress than they would be if it had a good 250 set up Wink

Laughing

I think, but do not know for sure, that the cases should have a full engine number on. The range the number falls into will tell you what the cases are suitable for.

I may be wrong though, but I imagine someone will know for sure.

mc16 cases

Sun Jul 29, 2007 9:21 am » Post: #8 » Download Post

just found to my cost that they are very different between mc16-18. after being smug in the certain knowledge that all nsr engines are the same as they all start with mc16, i tried to put an mc16 engine into an mc18 which i stole from a guy who had blown it up, tried to put the whole motor in. no mounts were wrong, top mount too wide and no rubber mounts, not a problem just use the complete top end save on gaskets pop the whole lot on, sorted, come to put the water pipes on, bugger wrong angle and size so had to change the heads so in the end the barrels were the only thing i could use, expensive mistake eh i should RTFM in future Crying or Very sad

Ah ha, yes they do all start mc16, no they are not all the same.

Why the engine numbers didn't progress with the model only Honda know, mc16, mc18 and mc21 are different for sure, I can't see any reason why the mc21 and mc28 cases aren't identical, they certainly look it and the cranks are interchangeable though not identical.

mc16 and mc18 have other issues and you should be very specific when asking what fits where.

The post seemed (to me) to be asking if the an engine number starting mc16 on an engine in an mc18, mc21 or mc28 meant the engine was wrong and they answer here is no.

Just to add onto it, MC16 barrel porting is nothing like MC18. If youve got '16 barrels on an '18 welcombe to the world of 45hp.
