MC16 derestrict and value?

Fri Jun 29, 2007 4:33 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi, I'm new to nsr's so please excuse my ignorance on them and any help from you experts is really appreciated.

I'm thinking of buying an MC16 with only 1300miles on the clock and nearly immaculate condition and wonder if £1595 is a fair price from a dealer or am I going to be conned?

Next question is: there is no mention on the website on how to derestrict the MC16's, is it possible and easy to do?

Many thanks for any help you can offer me, Tony.

There's no advice, as there's no restriction. They were produced before the Jap law came into force, so make as much as they were designed to.

They can make more, but it't not simple or free to find.

The main consideration with an MC16 is the age and parts availability. Not great these days sadly.

Not too bad a price if it'sa completely original and very clean, but you could get an MC21 for that, albeit a little tired round the edges. It will however make a lot more power, a lot more cheaply, and parts on the whole are still available through your Honda dealer.

Food for thought...

But... (playing Devil's advocate here!)

If the MC16 is clean and original, with only 1300 miles on the clock, then surely what a great buy? Well looked after and fed on top quality consumables, the bike's got at least 20 good years and 20,000 miles on the crank, if not more! You won't find many MC21's for £1500 you can say that about!

Look at the bikes at Beaulieu last weekend Dave: Rob's MC16 is 20 years old, RobH's and Jeff's MC18's are each 19 years old, Wayne's MC18 18 years old, none of which are original any more, but have given many years of good service. Just because this (virtually new) MC16 is 20 years old, it may only have about a years worth of wear on it!

Difficult to appraise something accurately without physically seeing it, but an MC21 isn't the perfect answer to everyone. (Although it should be!!Wink)

Hi Tony and welcome, there's not really any need to upgrade the mc16 engine if you plan to keep it all original, and if it's mint and £1600 why would you want too?
45bhp is quite enough for standard chassis, suspension etc.
If you're happy with that go for it
cheers Rob.

Many thanks for your advice, I'm going back for another look with money in hand now and all being well will be a fully fledged nsr owner soon. I was a bit sceptical first time but I'll give it a thorough going over and if nothing serious crops up I'll be buying.
Thanks again and I'll let you know how I get on.

Absolutely, and long may all models remain on the road.

Good luck with the inspection, and I hope it turns out to be a gem!
