'Loose' front end????

Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:55 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys, i think i might have a problem with the front end of my mc21. I'm pretty new to bikes so i really have no idea. The problem is that the front wheel feels a bit 'loose' sometimes. I think it might be something to do with the forks? But sometimes when leaning through a corner it gives a little wobble, and when i go over bumps when riding upright, the front tends to sort of fishy a bit (this is all felt through the handle bars). At first i thought the tyre was a bit flat, because it has never happened before, just started recently. But tyre/brakes/wheel all seem fine. What would cause this kind of instability in the front? It seems only minor at the moment - is it normal? Thanks in advance guys, your help is always much appreciated.

Check your wheel bearings and head bearings, youll need help for the head bearings as you need to have the front off the ground to see if there is any play, back n forth and when its turned left and right, if its notchy there gone may need a tighten up!!, like wise if you have sideways play in you front wheel you may need them replaced.

IS the tyre fairly new? as the tyre wears it may cause a wooble or strange handeling, check to see if its near uniform tread over the tyre. my cbr is needing a new tyre and its has a wooble on at low speed you can see the tread is wearing badly (next weeks job!!!)

And obviously check all nuts n bolts are tight, !

thats a start, if you cant find anything wrong might be worth taking it in if your still worried to have it checked over.

It is possible you have a loose steering head or some other related problem, but many steering problems are actually caused by the back of the motorcycle. Bad rear tire, swing are bearings, or shock or very real possibilities. Don't expect a quick answer. It could be anything and you'll need to stat investigating it.

Thanks heaps guys. I guess i really just wanted to know if i should be worried about it and how serious it is. I'll definately have a good look into it now. I like to keep my bike absolutely mint, so this won't do at all. It's wierd because it's so responsive when countersteering and playing with the front when riding, it just snaps left and right, so i wouldn't think the bearings were worn, but then out of the blue it just gives a little wobble sometimes. The tyres on it are fairly new and have only been getting a real wearing lately (as i have gotten the skill level up to teach them a lesson hehe) so maybe their wear has something to do with it? Whatever it is, i guess i'll have to get it looked at to make sure it's all mint. Cheers for the posts guys. (I can't get over how prompt and helpful the advice on this forum is! You're a massive help:))
