Wire splice

Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Have just bought my first NSR, it's a 94 MC21se, low k's, previous owner advertised as having de-restricted it with some wire splice.. question is what is that exactly? I own a VJ22 rgv and it has heaps more go, even though the honda feels smoother, but just feels like there should be more power. It's an import if that helps. Confused

All the NSR's are grey imports. Unlike Suzuki, the NSR was never distributed under the Honda Australia flag. Makes getting parts a wee bit harder, too.

The wire splice should give it a lot more go, you could check to see if it's been done correctly. I believe there are two steps to delimiting the MC21. It's all on this site, just have a look under TUNING.

Haven't ridden a RGV in many years, and the one I rode had power valve problems and I wasn't impressed with it (and my current bike was a CBR250!) So I can't comment. Should be able to get the NSR up to around the same horsepower pretty easily with just a few mods. I.e wire splice, pipe and opening the airbox (and a rejet). Make sure your power valve is adjusted correctly too. I prefer the HRC method for setting this as I adjusted via the factory method, and when I checked it against the HRC method, it was way out!

So, read the TUNING section so you're up to speed.

The RGV is deceptive. The poor power delivery makes it 'feel' fast, as you get a rush of 'power'... in the loosest term of the word!

A good condition, stock VJ22 will normally make around 57~58hp on an accurate dyno, whereas a properly delimited MC21 will make 60~61hp, and sometimes even more. (Even with stock pipes.) It's not unknown to see a stock delimted NSR make +5hp over a similarly standard RGV.

The area under the graphs between them though is like the difference between night and day. The abysmal bottom-end and spike at peak of the RGV makes an NSR feel like a four-stroke by comparison. However, keep the NSR`s tacho up around 10,000rpm and you will find it`s a much easier bike to go fast on, and consequently a faster bike!

Any standard (delimited) NSR that does not make at least 2~3hp more than an RGV of the same age, and bags more bottom/mid-range has something wrong with it! Full stop! Very Happy
