Engine removal

Thu Jan 26, 2006 10:22 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi everyone, how do you get the chain off the little drive wheel thing on the engine? I tried just moving it around, but the chain wont come off like on a bicycle Embarassed I would just unscrew the wheel but there are these funny washers with a tab on them that prevent access by a socket...

Also I removed the oil pump, and it seemed that there was some gearbox oil beyond the rubber seal - is this bad? Im still learning... Confused

Havn't done anything to my '28SP yet - but must be like any bike - Can't you just remove the big nut holding on the front sprocket and this sprocket should then just pull of the engine - hey presto - chain off.

Just pop a screw driver between the nut and the safety washer. You should be able to lever it by hand. If not, just tap it lightly with a small hammer. You can then spin the nuts off and take of the front sprocket. Make a note of which bits come out in which order, and their respective orientation, so that you can replace them in the correct order...

You may want to pop it in gear if it spins...

Ok thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure if the safety washers were some sort of warning not to mess with it!

Hey does anyone know if there is an easier way to get the lock-nut off that holds on the clutch hub and basket? The workshop says to weld together a 'clutch holder' to apply leverage to the hub - I don't have a welding machine around (although I do know how...), let alone any materials for this, cutting tools etc. Anyone found some shortcut?

No... You will need a clutch tool to do it correctly. It's torqued up pretty highly, and you will risk breaking the basket if you try and bodge it... The baskets are quite fragile so it's a lot easier to break them than you think! I found out the hard way!! Embarassed

If you have a local bikeshop, sling the engine in a van and ask them to spin it off for you.

Ok I've got the crankshaft out on the table. By the looks of it the sealant that was between the cases was pretty patchy, and I think I may have found a spot where the gearbox oil leaked through to the crank. And answer me this, who would place an oil well right next to the crankshaft housing, seperated only by a measly strip of sealant??

One of the crankcase bolts on my bike is also missing Rolling Eyes Looking at the parts manual, there are two parts suggested for the one that's missing, labelled 22 and 23:

22
95701-08080-08
Flange bolt 8x80

23
95701-08085-08
Flange bolt 8x85

Which one should I order (if they are still made...)?
