Daylight use only...

Mon Dec 12, 2005 11:02 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have an after market fairing on my bike which has no capacity to hold a headlight. The bike is used mostly for trackdays so it's really not worth the hassle of fitting one. I'd like to also use the machine on the road.
Can anyone advise me on the procedure of reregistering the bike for 'daylight use only'?

you must have a hard wired horn and there is some debate weather you need a brake light.
easiest way would be to have a word with the MOT station.

Jamie (Granby Motors bloke) told me a while back you CAN'T have any one light without the rest but I've spoken to people who have run just a brakelight.

Best to talk to the guy who's actually doing the test.

If it helps, My friend has a bike set up for just this, and youve seen it, you met gary at cadwell park on the rgv500 he dosent have front light only a rear with b light. if you want i can get him to drop you a line with what he needed for a daylight......Im going that way too, i have decided the bike will look nicer without the light and like you itll have very little road use!

when i used to ride british championship trials you had to ride the bike on the road to the sections. i had no lights at all on the bike, just a horn for the MOT. it was road registered from new.

StephenRC45 just MOT'd his MC21. It has a brakelight and a horn, and that's it! It runs an HRC harness so he had to make a little loom to run the brakelight.

We prepared Luke's 300 for MOT just before he went on holiday, but ran out of time before testing it. Again, no lights, just the brake light operated from the front switch and a horn. All the switchgear needs to be removed (i.e. everything on the left handlebar) and the associated wiring (leave the indicator relay in place) and a new horn push needs to be wired in. That's really all there is to it. Even the race pipes can go through an MOT at the tester's discretion now, as long as they aren't too noisy. More noise from the open carbs really!

Having seen loads of guys bikes who race streetstocks, the current rules seem to require a brakelight only. Without one, you'll get rear-ended by a dozey one eyed cell phone using twonk in a cage.

How long before you think the MC18's ready Skooter? Maybe Steve and I can meet up with you when it's done? Dave Ett's only in Wilts (er, usually!) too, not that far away.

You must come down our way too and do our favourite ride-out route! Even on the August Bank Holiday there was virtually no traffic, and the road is superb! Great surface, good visibility; great fun!

Hopefully not too long now. Apparently the head & cylinder have been repaired, just waiting on the piston kit to turn up. Then flush the engine out & rebuild it. The only other thing i need is a front tyre & a new chain for the MOT. Fairings are tatty, been sprayed a 'nice' silver blue colour ( Rolling Eyes ), but it'll do for now. Once i get it back & it seems ok, i'll start spending money on it Very Happy

I'm well up for a meet up some time. Dave & I talked about it a while ago. I'm in Frome, so not too far. Smile

Sounds superb! Cool I'll need a few weeks to shake the rust off, as i haven't ridden for over a year since selling my Gixer. But really really can't wait. The NSR seems so small & light, it should be a great laugh. also gagging to loose my track virginity, really want to do Donington GP Very Happy

i am sure me and Fontyyy will be doing it some time in the summer though probably the national circuit (its far better) and it wouldnt surprise me if nigel and stephenrc45 are there as well, maybe even stuart.
i also have no doubt that there will be another NSR day at somewhere like Llandow as well.

Excellent. Donington national sounds good, i've always wanted to do a track day there. Been to so many races there, seen the onboard laps, driven around it in games....just need to do it in real life Laughing
