CCM in the late 70's developed a 5 stroke engine. The Goverment were going to help finance it all but in the end never did so the project was stopped. They did have it running and they used it in a couple of their test MX bikes.

Sounds simple enough (if I grasp it!). There are no valves as such, or springs. You have a miniture upside down two stroke engine on top of the cylinder, and as the 2 stroke pistons go up and down they let fuel mixture into the cylinders proper.
