Just wondering how do you know when your crank shaft is on its way out -what are the symtoms?

Sometomes they don't give warnings. Just pulled my crank out to replace. One of the connecting rods had twice the side play spec (the reason I pulled it out to replace) and also found that one of the main bearing cages was in the process of destroying itself. Before I stripped the bike down she ran like a scalded cat.
