MC21 clunking noise

Fri Jun 24, 2005 11:05 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

On my ride home yesterday I noticed a clunking noise that was not there earlier. It definitely gets faster as speeds increase. Engine speed does not affect it, clutch doesn't affect it either. Happens when under power or coasting. Any ideas? I got home late so I really haven't had a chance to take a look yet but figured someone might know for sure and save me some time.

Thanks
Don

Those are the only suspects that I can come up with too. Shouldn't be the front wheel bearings because I swapped those out a month ago. I can't really tell if it's coming from the front or the rear really though. Guess I'll start with those two and go from there unless someone comes up with a better guess.

Get the rear wheel off the ground and spin it round to see if there are any tight spots in the chain.

Check the brake pads, as they can be the ones making the noise.

I thought about that Charles, so I tried hitting the brakes hard or soft and listened for a change. Nothing except for the noise slowing down due to the decrease in speed. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Don there were no small furry animals in your path on the way home were there? Some poor squirrel may be stuck somewhere in your fairing knocking to be released, well it was a thought anyway....... Very Happy Laughing Laughing

It was indeed the chain. Finally got around to investigating it. Happened each time the same point of the chain came around. Put a nice new gold RK chain on with a 43T sprocket and everything is wonderful again. Thanks for all the suggestions.

43T?... nice! Twisted Evil

Tell me what it goes like! I currently have the stock 15/40 on mine but was thinking of going to 42T.

Cheers,

Goes like stink now! At 65mph it's revving at 6000rpm in 6th gear! I don't have much need for top speed. I use the bike primarily for fun and occasional commuting. The 43T seems to suit my type of riding. It's also much easier to start from a standstill. Less clutch slipping.
