NSR 500 V4 inside the beast !!!

Mon Dec 24, 2012 1:36 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi mates.

I had for many years in my pc many photos from a complete engine rebuilt that took place at the Honda museum if i remember correct.

The photos are from THE most amazing GP machine ever; the NSR500 V4.

So I thought that would be nice to share them with the NSR community as many here would be very interesting to take a look inside the beast Smile

So here it is, I hope all of you to enjoy it.

Those pics are amazing.
Pardon my ignorance, but I thought all of the V4 NSR's were single crank?

Well, yeah that might of been a little lie.

The cranks lie on the same axis but they aren't a single crank. If I recall though they did a number with a one piece centre gear making those a single crank.

As a note, I don't ever recall Honda claiming or stating it was a single crank, more the press.

I never heard for a single crank on a V4 NSR.
As i know all of them have two cranks with the same design like this in the photos.
A think that i remember and impressed me when i saw it,was that the NSR500 V4 after 1989 models as it is this in the photos has a specific design on the cylinders to prevent more coolant after some problems with the temperatures.
This design almost doubled the coolant amount of the cylinder and the head studs actually been outside of the cylinder.
If you are interesting i may have a drawing of it somewhere in my pc folders, just let me know to search for it.

As seen here.

The earlier NSR500 V4 had almost MC16/18 style barrels.

Yes Stephen as you said pre 90 models had a simmilar design whith mc16-mc18 but they had problems with temperatures and after they made this design with displaced cylinder studs to prevent more coolant.

And at 0:30... You just know Mr. HRC is chuckling inside! Laughing

He launches that SEED off the line! Unfortunately it looked like he launched it into the tyres just before the end, too! Confused

Ahhhh, it all becomes clear now. Very Happy
Twin contra-rotating cranks on the YZR500 (also RGV and Cagiva 500's?).
Twin cranks on the NSR rotating in the same direction.

Those are great video's Stephanos.

Yep, the NSR500 is a true V4. Not an oblique square 4 with 2 "proper" full width cranks counter rotating to balance the rotational forces like a YZR500.

This is an RD500, but it shows the idea of a twin cranked "V4" (it's not a V is it?) clearly.
