New NSR250 MC28 SP Owner

Sun Mar 26, 2023 6:42 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Just got my hands on a MC28 SP project!

I am trying to identify all of the parts I have...

Seemingly I have one complete engine which appears to be unserviceable, I also have got my hands on a brand new set of crankcases, however they have no numbers?

How would I go about correlating my frame numbers with those on the crankcase?

All information at this point is welcome!

Hello "Batesyyyyy", and welcome to NSR-WORLD!

Congratulations on the new project. I hope you will start up a build thread so we can see how you get on.

If you have a look at this page:

NSR-WORLD.COM Online Manuals - 94-96 NSR250R MC28

Look at page 6 (B-9) and you will see the frame numbers and their correlating and engine number ranges. It may be obvious, but I'll say it anyway, the engine numbers all start MC16E-

Thanks for the reply!

I am wanting to know why my crankcases have no number as they are brand new?

How should i now go about correlating the correct engine number to my frame number?

Brand new cases are blank so they can be stamped with the original engine number [technically, by an official Honda franchise].

Personally, I would check what's stated on the V5, and if that number falls into the MC28 engine number range, stamp the cases accordingly. If you don't have a V5 (if it's a new import, for example), the number should be somewhere on the import documentation. The Japanese are very fastidious about things like that, so whatever's on the Japanese paperwork will almost certainly be original and correct.

Honda UK MAY be able to tell you the engine number if you contact them. You'll need to write to them... don't expect to be able to talk to someone in person! There have been claims in the past of Honda UK confirming exact models by frame number before (owners wanting to verify genuine SP models), but I have never personally seen any proof of this actually happening.
