HT Coil Honda 1989 NSR250 MC18 R5k

Hi
Hope someone can point me in the right direction please, any help will be gratefully received.

I need to Fit a new HT Coil for the FRONT Cylinder for the above NSR250.

Looking on the CMSNL site drawing F-28-1 https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-nsr250r5-type-ii-1989-k-japan_model49611/partslist/0193.html
lists Ref No 5 - COIL COMP.,IGNITION - Part No: 30510KV3771 as still being available (bonus).

Looking at the Diagram I would normally take that particular coil as being at the FRONT, unfortunately for me I happened to look at the equivalent Diagram for the 1988 R2J first https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-nsr250r2-1988-j-japan_model49608/partslist/0193.html and it listed the coil Ref No 5 COIL COMP.,RR.IGN which I take - 'RR' - as meaning the REAR!

My questions are:
1. Is the 1988 R2J Diagram incorrect (eg Ref 5 HT Coil is the FRONT Coil) or am I mis understanding Honda’s Abbreviations’ (eg FR - FRONT RR - REAR)?
2. Would it make much of a difference fitting this coil if it were the REAR Coil (other than changing the HT Lead Lengths)?
3. Are there better and newer HT coils that I should be considering fitting?
or am I just being too pedantic!!

Many thanks in anticipation and a Merry Christmas to you all.

Regards

Philip

According to the official 1987-1989 Parts Manual [Final issue #9]

1987 RG
Rear (RR) coil: 30510-KV3-000
Front (FR) coil: 30520-KV3-000

1988 R2/4J
Rear (RR) coil: 30510-KV3-700
Front (FR) coil: 30520-KV3-700

1989 R5/6K
Front (FR) coil: 30510-KV3-771
Rear (RR) coil: 30520-KV3-771

The MC21 and MC28 manuals both list the coils as folows:

Front (FR) 30510-KV3-xxx
Rear (RR) 30520-KV3-xxx

So it would appear that from 1989 they swapped the part numbers.

The front coil has a longer HT lead, so you may find a rear coil [if that turns out to be the only one available] would need repositioning to reach the front plug. It [effectively] doesn't matter which coil you fit, as bar the HT lead, they are all of similar construction.

Note: People have used an NSR125R coil before [30510-GF9-405]. The body of the coil is different, and needs trimming, but it gets the job done.

I've seen this on Weibike, but it doesn't specify which NSR250 models

Hi Andy

Once again many thanks for clarifying that, its very much appreciated and looks a total mine field.

That's another step forward in getting the Bike back to running been a long drawn out process due to other family distractions.

Have a lovely Christmas all the best for the New Year and many thanks for the help.

regards
Philip

I had the same conundrum

Hope this helps as far as I can see on the MC21 version it’s the shape that’s changed and the length of the HT cable from earlier MC18 coils (rear lead needs cutting down)
Apologies for quoting myself but it seemed a bit daft to post a link and then expect you to go and find the post in my rambling build

Then you get onto the HV coils the new ones that arrived have rounder bodies with a slot – MC18 coils are more 50p piece shaped hence the difference in part number(s) so the rubber holders don’t fit, however I got round that by buying the later MC21 retaining rubbers which understandable are a perfect fit - peace love and harmony being restored after a little more wallet waving at the problem!
