UK registering a potentially unregistered bike!

Sun Jun 07, 2020 6:43 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi from the North of England, I'm going to pickup an NSR 250 track bike next week, its been a dream of mine to own one for a long time, this ones not complete but I'm looking for the project as much as anything and the money is right. Originally I just wanted to race 250's but realistically, I wont be competing any more due to time and money problems!

It would be nice if I could eventually ride it to track days, events and parades so I want to get a V5 for it. Now....slim chance, but it could have been registered before and maybe cat C/D (well here's to hoping anyway!) - it is a rolling chassis so I'll check wheelbase and frame/yoke for any twists or bends but it looks incredibly clean, some scuffing on the expansion pipes where its had a good slide but it'll patch up with some sheet metal and new rear sets etc.

Does anyone know how I proceed with the v5 without knowledge of the reg or nova status? I guess I just apply for a V5C and see if it bounces back? I think I can HPI check the VIN which will tell me if it's ever been road registered in the UK and they may be able to link me to the registration but the last car I HPI checked showed as having a different VIN anyway and their records were at fault so they're not exactly perfect (that was a Japanese import too).

Can anyone share any experiences or knowledge?

All the best,

Hi Russ, and welcome to NSR-WORLD.

I would say Johnnymac is probably the most clued up on this for UK bikes currently. I'm sure he'll be along soon!

Looking forwards to hearing about your project in due course!

Hi Russ
It’s not that easy anymore yes you can see if vin no is on data base I hope it is but as soon as you apply to dvla for v5 they will ask you for the registration no they will not tell you it with data protection,
If it had never been regd in the uk , if more recently imported they are also very reluctant to do so without the bike being regd on the nova 14 days after it enters the uk ,
There are ways round it but with the dvla being as helpful as they are 🤔☹️ Not ,
I would post a pic of the bike and see if anyone recognise it and maybe it was a road bike once and they may be able to help with an old discarded v5 🤞
But with the Covid going on dvla are telling you not to send any paperwork in during the pandemic,

Good luck with it and welcome to the forum

Paul Goat and I are about to go through the same process. I’ll try to dig out a link to an article which said the hmrc are fairly relaxed about issuing nova documentation on bikes that were in the uk prior to nova system coming in.

I’ve not had a chance to investigate further, and there are people who specialise in doing this for you, but will post up more info shortly.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-NSR250-MC21/114234618481

here is a link to the bike, i’ve searched for the frame and engine number online (sometimes people talk about them) and can’t find anything. A local dealer checked HPI for me and it’s never been registered, which is what he said but i was hoping for an easy ride! I called HPI as they owe me 2 checks but they won’t check a frame numbers unless you’re a dealer!

Anyhow,

I don’t know if someone might recognise the bike, the fairings aren’t original obviously, but that might make it more identifiable. Everything looks to be in order, i think i’ll take the plunge.

I didn’t buy it on ebay but whoever did hasn’t collected it for whatever reason, which peaked my suspicion but everything about it checks out.

Great project, but whoever fitted that air filter needs a kick in the balls! Rolling Eyes I see the air correction plumbing is missing too, so you'll be wanting to find the X & Y-piece and associated pipework, or you'll never get it running right.

Looks like a good basis for a restoration, keep us updated on the Nova situation and of course on the progress of the bike!
