MC18 Premix Confusion

Mon Apr 24, 2017 2:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys
Newb here just became owner of an MC18 current owner said he was running premix ration of 40:1 and i have seen post here 50:1 and 30:1
so now i am a bit confused the bike has no airbox billows smoke like a banshee so i am assuming its been jetted. I know assumptions are bad but
i just havent had a chance to get carbs off to check. Also the bike has stood for over a year and was told they started her up every now and then.
On way home from purchase the bike spluttered and farted at around 7/8k RPM then when nearing home it bogged out after a minute or 2 it just started easy again
Really dont want to mess this engine up completely
Anyone with some info as to best premix ratio to use.
Cheers Wayne

Honda's reccomendation would be 30/1, but i personally run 40/1 on my 21 track bike and also on my rs250, i also ran an rs125 gp on 50/1 for two years with no problems, and that included winning a championship and countless wins etc;, BUT, dont take my word as gospel, i'm an old fart who should know better.

I also run 40:1 on a good fully synthetic oil (Silkolene or Rock Oil). Previous owner (Johnnymc) ran it at 50:1 I think. Not sure what jets I have, meant to write down the numbers when I last had the carbs off but forgot.

Do you use it on the road? Being a castor oil is it ok to keep it mixed in the tank for a while? I'd heard that premixed fuel with castor oil ideally needs to be used soon after mixing.

Hi Ian
I have been led to believe the same, and Si if you mixed up Castrol 747 in the last 20 th century when you tried to start your bike all those years ago I would recommend draining the tank and use some fresh fuel, Wink Wink
Ian hows the 21 going ? have you put many miles on it ?
And Si hope all is well in your world might see you at Donnington soon,
All the best to both,
jonmac

It was in storage since last September until last weekend. It needed a little tlc (cleaned some residue out of the carbs, renewed part of the fuel line) then it went through it's MOT on Monday with no real issues so I'll probably take it out on the road this weekend. Hope to get to a track day soon.
