Distractions!

Tue Jul 05, 2016 7:00 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

So as if I didn't have enough on my plate with my track bike/F3 hybrid project I couldn't resist buying Fontys old race bike last year.

It came with whole load of spares/landfill and was running NF5 top ends and PGM. The plan was to remove and keep the NF5 stuff for future projects, rebuild the bike using the parts that came with the deal, use it for a couple of track days while I finish building my other bike and then sell it on.

Well that was the plan! The bike did run when I bought it but had been standing unused for some time so would need a bit of work to get it track worthy. so forks were stripped, seals replaced and rebuilt with new oil. Brakes and master cylinders were striped cleaned and assembled with new seals, various missing bolts, spacer, seals and bits and bobs were replaced from my parts stock, linkages and bearings greased. I replaced the nf5 cylinders with a nice spare set of stock cylinders and pistons from my stock(I did get a whole crate of cylinders with the spares lot, none of which were usable Very Happy ) and replaced the mc18 rad with a 21 rad.

So new fluids were added and she fired up. I ran it through a couple of heat cycles and everything seemed good, apart from the puddle of coolant! damn thing was leaking from the base gasket of the lower cylinder. This is were my patience ran out and I parked it up and ignored it.

After ignoring it for a few months I decided I needed to get the damn thing sorted and sold. I dropped the engine out and stripped it and opened up another can of worms.

Although the bottom end sounded okay when it was running the main bearings had definitely seen better days and the r/h outer main bearing locating pin had sheared at some point and spun in the cases. Not only was the crank f****d it had trashed the cases when it had spun Sad

Luckily I had a rebuilt crank with fresh main bearings and a set of cases in my rapidly diminishing spares stash. So engine back together with fresh crank, new seals through out and a leak down test showed it was all air tight Very Happy

So the engine was fitted, fluids added, battery charged and nothing, not even a spark......dead as a bloody Dodo!

When I got the bike it was running R5K PGM2 electrics although the loom had been stripped down for track use but it ran fine. By this point I have had enough of the damn thing so I ripped all the electrics off of my other track bike and fitted those. That's an mc21 HRC loom and de restrictor box, stator, flywheel, PGM 3 and associated hardware, Oh well in for a penny!

The bike originally had RS bodywork fitted which looked good but had definitely seen better days, plus some of the bracketry and meccano used to install it had me twitching so I decided to go with stock shape fibreglass so that's an mc21 subframe and undertray from my spares stash installed Very Happy

I also made a copy of the HRC foam dash I have on the other bike and mounted the mc18 gauges in it.

The bike came with Tyga pipes fitted, as an ex race bike its to be expected that it has been down the road a couple of times and the pipes are a bit battle scarred. Unfortunately they appear to have been repaired by Stevie Wonder after a night on the beer! Bird sh*t just doesn't do justice to the welding!!! Very Happy

I couldn't bring myself to refit these to my now tidy looking bike so I have fitted the dogfight pipes I refurbished for my other project.

I had a couple of sets of oem style fibreglass bodywork in the spares that came with the bike so I picked the best set, repaired a few bits and gave it some fresh paint.

Hi PG
The little bike looks well and although it did go out of its way to tormenting you with issue after issue it was well worth persevering with it
It would make decent little track bike for someone, especially with a fresh motor and few nice trick bits,
Just the job,
All the best,
jonmac

Go on, bring it to Donny on the 19th! You know you want to!

Shaping up to be a top day, with some very special guests confirmed now too! Wink

I would love to but can't get the time of work. What's really frustrating is I just spent 2 months at East Mids airport in ear shot of Donnington Park.
