Setting the RC Valve Problems. PGM?

Sat Jan 31, 2015 11:52 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

So I finally got around to setting the RC Valve and followed the instructions on NSR World. As expected the servo sprung to life but when I unplugged the TPS nothing seems to happen (it doesn't change position). The power valves weren't caught and I could turn the servo motor by hand without any unusual resistance. So according to some previous posts this may mean the PGM is shot. I saw a post that says if the transistors are shot it may only turn one way but I recall moving the servo by hand (with the bike off) to L and H and the servo moving to the start setting. Nonetheless my question is why would this be happening and is it most likely due to a fault with the PGM unit? (I'll have another look tomorrow but thought I'd ask here first).

My second question is, is the PGM easily fixed? Again, from searching the forums I found the replacement transistors are NEC 2SA1385. But purchasing them seems to be expensive ($10 each, for transistors! What a rip). So probably easier to send it to the 2strokeRaceLab for repair but that's again, quite expensive. I have experience soldering on boards; Is it easy to get in there and replace parts? Andy said the cover just pops off but the pictures of repair bu the 2strokeRaceLab show the back cut open. I guess the board doesn't separate from the back for repair?

And lastly, I've seen some talk regarding Ignitech units. And my problem with the PGM unit is that it's susceptible to damage and as much as I want to keep it on the bike, I would prefer a more refined and modern unit that won't fail. So do the Ignitech units suffer the same problem? I say this because according to the price lists on their website, the unit isn't terribly expensive (Cheaper than a second hand PGMIII and comparable to repairing it) and apparently they come with the correct map? (I have an MC21, a comment said it's almost plug and play, just the settings need to be checked). And I'm not looking to really suck as much power out of the bike as possible, I'm just seeking around the 65HP mark and keeping it a reliable steed (I'm gonna keep the oil pump as well).

Any thoughts on that matter are appreciated.
