change gearbox oil tips?

Mon Apr 25, 2005 12:27 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

any secret NSR oil changing tips?
i know with my YZ426F, there is a certain procedure that has the best reslults.

im guessing the NSR is a bit more simplistic since there are no external oil lines delivering oil to all those wiggly bits (that only exist in 4 strokes)

i had my NSR upright with the plastic off and saw two possible drainplugs on the bottom of the bike.

i went to open the oil filler cap to see if NSR's have a dip stick or what, and oil started spewing out all over. I immediately screwed the cap back in.

so before i make another mess, any adivice on changing oil / checking oil levels, would be GREAT!

Thanks.

Oopse. Sounds like you have a 2 stroke oil seal failure. See the associated thread already on here...

how hard is it to take that seal area appart
can i test for this without taking it appart?
i was really hoping to ride for the first time this weekend!
still gotta hook up my blinkers and rejet it

if i have to much more to do on it, i wont get to ride
grrrrrr

there is still 2 stroke oil in my resevoir
so if it was leaking a lot, wouldnt it be empty?
i suppose it could have reached a pressure equilibrium though..
maybe i should drian the gear oil and see if my 2stroke oil level gets lower over the next few days...

also still looking for tips on draining and filling back up the gearbox oil
meausre the CC before or is there a fill hight plug that once it drips out of you know you have enough oil.

There are two possibilities here:
    1. As Dave says, check out this thread
    2. Someone has simply previously filled the gearbox right up with oil!

If you look at the Service Schedule in The Workshop, you will see a diagram of the gearbox filler cap/dipstick, and on the MC21 Specifications page you will find the transmission oil quantities under the "capacities" heading.
