fuel petcock stuck, is there a trick

Mon Apr 04, 2005 3:00 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I went to look at the bike that I'm considering buying again, and started noting the things I needed to do to try to start it. When removing the tank, I first turned the fuel off. When I turned the petcock to the OFF position, I heard a tiny click. I now cannot turn the fuel back on, the valve won't turn. Is there a trick? Do you have to push or pull on the knob? I was afraid I would break it, so I thought I'd better ask the group.

Nope, no trick. It should gently click in all positions. Did you try turning it at the tap end, not the tube end?

When my bike had been sitting for a while, the fuel broke down and jammed the tap.

Sounds like this might be whats causing your problem. I drained the fuel and removed the tap from the tank and gave it a good clean out.

Shake the tank and see if you can hear anything moving around inside the tank like sand Confused
