All the decals are in japanese supplemented with limited english. Only the VIN number is normal english numbering. Doesn't the japanese language have japanese numerals?

Any yet the kick starter has prominent "kick starter" in english riased letters. Go figure.

How do i know if the model is R, SP or SE? It has a dry clutch so that rules out the R model, correct?

Japanese uses digits 0-9 for numbers like pretty much any other language around...

R = base model. Wet clutch, aluminum rims, non-adjustable suspension
SE = dry clutch, adjustable suspension, aluminum rims
SP = dry clutch, adjustable suspension, magtek rims

Magtek rims have a flat side wall, and say Magtek on one of the spokes.

of course it doesn't take much to turn an SE into an SP. Takes a little more to turn an R into an SE or SP but people have done it.

Basically it's hard to be 100% sure if it's a true SP, but if you got a dry cluch, adjustable suspension and Magtek rims and the bike is in good condition be happy...

Also check the sticker on the subframe - it will specify the model code (cross reference with the data on this site, or in the workshop manual). Again, it's not an absolute, but just another piece of evidence, & one normally overlooked.

And so the quest for NSR knowledge begins..........

There are serial number ranges that some bikes won't fit in, which helps a little too. But many overlap so like everything else it's not an absolute.

Found the sticker on the subframe. It is nsr250r9n. Found date on an electrical component of 8/1/90. Title says 1990. I assume it is a 1990 model. Looked at VIN numbers in parts manual but there is significant overlap. Just funny how there is no date stamped on it anywhere. Thanks for all your help guys. The bike would be worthless to me without this site.

Hey, another R9N. cool... I just wish I had the blue one instead (can't remember the model). Red isn't my bag, baby.

Iam trying to figure out the modle/year of an NSR I am working on too. It happens to be a good friends bike which he gave in a few boxes to reassemble. I am ordering parts but I am nervous because I don't know exactly what I have here. So far I have new pistons with new rings that don't fit the ring grooves...
Help?
Mark
