Weeping head nut

Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:50 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I put this question in the build thread, but putting them here tends to get a quicker answer.

One of the nuts on the head is weeping.

I haven't removed the head yet, but there is no evidence of water getting into the cylinder, only following the stud out.

Any ideas how to fix?

The more I dwell on it (and it's guaranteed to keep me restless and awake) the more I think the stud might have caused a crack in the water jacket?

A couple of the studs were really hard to get in and out.

I've just replied to your question in your build thread. A copper washer under the head nut should do the trick.
I had a problem with a cylinder were the studs were tightened too much causing the cylinder to crack around the studs.
Copious amounts of silicone sealant in the stud holes in the cylinder and threads of the studs solved (bodged!) the problem... Don't ask me what type of silicone I used... it was over twenty years ago.

Ive had this problem as I have an o rings in the barrels modification and coolant can leak up the studs.

Copper washers and dome capped nuts will sort it, Ive had no problems since.

I think the (possibly) cracked cylinder is the issue here and needs to be fixed, not bodged.

A good welder will be able to sort it out.
