How rare are MC18SP's???

Sun May 03, 2009 6:34 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have a chance of buying a MC18SP cheap, but it needs a mega amount of work to even look at getting it to run.

So...

1 Are thet that rare?

2 How much are they worth in nice condition?

3 What colour scheme should i paint it as i t will need a full set of body work

4 Will you lot talk to me more, as i will own something other than my MC28.......lol

Cheers Rob

Both Types of '18Sp are quite rare. Much more so than the 21's (in the uK anyway).

'88 SP 18 should be in Rothmans

'89 SP 18 should be in TERRA RACING colours.

No, you still own a '28 so you know the answer Wink

I've got an '88 MC18SP which I have been trying to do up. I recently totalled the motor and getting new parts is proving to be a nightmare. I have bought both right and left Rothmans side panels NOS but cannot get a nose fairing for love nor money (would prefer paying money).

Trying to find a crank and barrels is very difficult - I have just got hold of an ex-race bike (see topics close to this one) and taken a punt that the engine might be OK. If you find you don't want the SP and the engine is servicable I would be interested - I guess the NSR bug is getting to me......

On the plus side, before it blew I was having a great time and now I have two unfinished projects of uncertain provenance to prat about with.

Isn't the 88sp engine just a standard mc18 wet clutch model?
Cheers Rob.

Yes, it wasn't untill the '89 SP that it got the dry clutch.

This one has a dry clutch and looks like it was ridden in a swamp for the last 20 years.

It also has no body work only a tank that has been hand painted matt black. Std exhausts no goodies i could see.

What do you think it is worth to buy approx

And worth sorted?

Just approx figures.

I know its hard to judge but i dont want to buy some thing and find out there are no spares and i could have bought a sorted one for not a lot more

Cheers Rob

An SP is its bodywork.

Any model SP without the OE SP pannels is worth much less than one with it.

As it happens I have a full set of '89 Terra SP pannels but I'm waiting to find the bike to fit them too.

The last '18 I purchased was a '89 in almost perfect condition and untouched. I payed £800.

I would think with no fairings, and doubtful condition of motor and chassis I would be looking to pay a quater of that.

Re sale value. Well Less than a MC21 SP but cooler. '18 prices are alittle hit and miss these days.

What do you mean "back" up?
I don't think it's good thing prices are getting silly, when a early 90's 250 costs considerably more than a reasonably new R6 (and double or triple what a comparable different make/model 90's grey import costs) all that's going to happen is these bike will just be locked up and never used.
Where are all these mint mc28's (and vj23's) Fastline and the like are selling? They aren't being sold to people who are using them.
That's a bad thing.
