MC21 engine removal/replacement

Thu Nov 17, 2005 10:24 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi. I am buying my first NSR today! Should be a bit more nimble than my GS850G... I am swapping the (dead) motor in my new MC21 for a complete 2nd hand unit. Any general tips for this procedure for someone who has not done this before? Also, if anyone in Brisbane has a set of nice of exhausts to sell please let me know...

I've only done the removal bit so far...

No real problems to be honest. Disconnect everything you can see that goes to the frame. I removed the front sprocket so I could get the chain off. I took the radiator and oil tanks off to make it easier, though I daresay you could do it with them in situ.

I also took the airbox and carbs off - the less weight the better really.

Once all the ancilliaries are off, just loosen all the bolts holding the motor in the frame, and support it on a jack or block then remove them all. Easy job really.

If it's your first time, then take the oil pump off too! It is a pain in the ass and always gets in the way!!

Removal and refitting is a doddle with the pump off. Smile

Thanks for your tips but I actually got it all done before I had a chance to check your replies. New motor is in and about to be fired up. You were right about the oil pump, Andy...
