Help, my NSR is dying!

Wed Sep 07, 2005 1:51 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,
I bought my first bike, an NSR Mc18 only 6 weeks ago and am having major troubles with it!

Seeing as I dont know much about bikes, was wondering if anyone could help - here are the facts to whats been happening to the bike:

About 4 weeks ago I was getting a real strong smell of fuel, the powerband not always kicking in, sometimes just revs harder when it should kick in! Asked my mate whom i bought the bike from, and he told me the choke cable doesnt work. I replaced all spark plugs, checked for blackness and whiteness to see if I was running too rich or not enough fuel was getting in, then it was fine for 3 weeks or so. I just took it out for a spin yesterday and I have absolutly no power! Revs aren't up, can only go 100kmh, if I try to go into 4th the revs drop below 6000rpm. No powerband at all, its only good in 3rd gear 7-9000rpm, when I take off a mother and her stroller are quicker than me!!!!

Just wondering if anyone has had any problems like this and seeing if they can push me in the right direction before I take it to a mechanic, as they will rip me off as I'm a very rank amature when it comes to bikes!!!!

Please HELP!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil Crying or Very sad Sad

Have you done a compression test on your cylinders?

Yeah Danstin that sounds exactly like what happened when I blew my PGM and the power valves werent working.

First up take the right hand side cover off start the engine and give it a bit of a rev and see if the power valves are cycling. If they're not. It could that the valves are jammed up with crap in which case you need to pull them out and clean them. Or perhaps a dud servo motor.. or last and definitely worst case scenario the PGM might be stuffed.

If the power valves are cycling ok.. I'd be taking a look at the carbs stripping them down and giving them a good clean before doing anything else.. let us know how you get on.
