They can often be a bit "clunky" into 1st gear, but many Hondas seem to be like that.

Clutch drag can cause it, so make sure the cable is adjusted properly, and that there's no wear on the basket or hub. Also check the torque link for work bushes. Movement in the link can cause notchy changes, as can a worn or badly adjusted chain.

As Neal says, different oils can even have different results, and Dave's correct too, a bent selector shaft [which can happen if the bike is crashed on the left side, but damage can often not be apparent] can cause selection problems too. Along those lines, you should check the selector forks as well, although in my experience it's less likely to be an issue.
