I've seen Andy use the soup - it works very well even if he did have to hunt around for one particular ingredient.
Personally I'd not grit brast it at all - too much damage and abrasion. Consider a plasma blast and / or glass bead blasting. The plasma pressure blast will make it look new but leaves the surface porus and it collects crap and will corrode quickly without some form of surface treatment. Glass bead blasting is really neat though - leaves the surface with a sort of glossy finish and resists the elements quite well as it's not so abrasive.
