I'd have just gone elsewhere!
I did have a similar "problem" recently with buying a radiator for a 1.6 Eunos Roadster. Despite the fact I know they are the same for 1.6 and 1.8 across a wide range of years, no-one would get one unless I could give a registration number so they could cross-reference it by registration year!
The stupid thing is, like with NSR's, the car could be any year "around" its registration year, which in fact it is! It on a J plate, but it's actually a 1993, not a 91~92. In the end I was able to by it from a human being who actually listened to what I wanted to say... and even got it about £40 cheaper than any of the conventional motor factors.
It's still no excuse in the UK when ordering NSR parts though. The local shop I used to use are tiny. They still even only had microfiche until about 5 years ago, yet they could order NSR parts for me since around 1995. It was them who told me they had all been issued the Japanese microfiche by Honda UK. Whether they chose to use it was another thing I guess.
