Iron Butt Ride on a NS50F

BobMunden » Sat Jul 19, 2008 7:50 pm

I do ultra long distance riding. I am a member of the Iron Butt Association (www.ironbutt.com) and recently completed a BB1500 (over 1500 miles in under 36 hours) by riding a Honda NS50F 1605 miles in 33 hours and 3 min. This will be a new record once the association certifies it. My problem is however the performance of the engine. I have a 24 mm flat slide Mikuni carb, carbon fibre reed valves, nology wire, and Arrow exhaust - all purchased from Calamari Racing in California. Fairings, sprockets and seating etc. etc. have also been changed. The performance is good until it comes past 3/4 throttle then it bogs. I have gone from a 180 main jet that the carb came with down to a 145 and although slightly different the main problem remains and it is not actually any faster top end than the stock bike. The Exhaust gas temp even with the 140 main jet is still in the high 500 to low 600 deg. celcius range and I understand up to 700 deg. C. is OK.
I would like to try to break the Cross continent record by riding from San Diego to Jacksonville in under 50 hours. I believe it is possible but not with a bike that won't quite go 60 mph on a flat run with no wind.
I do not care about mid range or low range power. All of the riding on these trips is at as high a speed as possible. Any advice as to how to gain higher speed would be greatly appreciated. By the way the bike will nor rev over 11500 rpm under any circumstances (even in neutral).
