I had that happen on my hornet. I overthought it and assumed there was something wrong with the tranny. I ripped the shift drum out and all that. In the end it turned out to be the shifter lever sticking at the pivot, it was dry as a bone.
Lube the pivot on your shifter lever and see if it frees up before you think the worst.
