Thanks for the ideas dudes,

RC45s answer is what i thought (hoped) might be going on, coz there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn't work as far as i can see, so i wondered if it was ok but for some reason i just couldn't SEE the spark in that situation. Thanks to chester for looking up the electrics for me!
