The problem lies with the bike. I'm sure it should start on the kick alone. When we bumped it the engine turned with no problem at all. It started ok when the weather dried up. 
I reckon it was due to the damp.
Any bike should start within a few turns of the engine. If it doesn't there's something wrong with the bike.
