Finally my MC16 is running properly!

mat grant » Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:35 pm

Hi all,

I have finally got my MC16 to run properly! It is now nice to ride and doesn't misfire it's way through the powerband.

I have rebuilt the top end, I put MC18 pistons/rings/barrels on it, and MC18 carbs with the air feed controlled by the solenoid blanked off.

It would run great at low to mid rpm (up to about 5000) but then would misfire loads and just run really bad higher up on full or part throttle. It would only go up to about 90mph top speed.

I eventually got round to putting the MC16 carbs back on - bearing in mind I had never used these as I bought the bike as a non runner. But I took the jets out and cleaned them with carb cleaner, then put the carbs on.

It then ran but only ran properly on one cylinder. Arrgghh! So I took them off, and stripped them. I noticed one of the carbs had hardly any fuel in when I opened the drain screw. The reason was the floats and bracket were a bit bent and so were sticking in the valve closed position - it was was fuel starving on one cylinder. This could have something to do with why the bike was siezed on one piston when I got it.

After putting the cabrs back on, the bike ran ok. so I had the bright idea of putting the MC18 carbs back on, but with the MC16 main jets. Voila! it now worked properly all through the power band! the MC16 jets I have are 115, the MC18 ones i've got are 128.

And it is definitely faster with the MC18 carbs. Next time I can be bothered to take the carbs off I'm going to swap the slow jets over as well (35 vs 3Cool and see what difference that makes.

So thanks to all the people who responded to my previous posts about why the MC16 ran so bad expecially if you said it was carb related(!) - it' a pity that the fix didn't come in time to get the bike on the track day...

One day I'm going to make it to one of these track days!

Cheers, Mat.
