Thanks for getting back to me. I have the thicker of the two spacers fitted in the nearside, you mention the offside, so that might explain it!
I have them arranged that the spindle is inserted from the nearside, therefore the fork lower with the bigger diameter hole is also on the nearside and the spindle nut is threaded in from the offside...
